Carlos Correa is expected to undergo ankle surgery and miss the remainder of the 2026 MLB season, the Houston Astros shortstop told reporters Wednesday.
Correa was 0 for 4 in the Astros’ 8-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday in Houston. He said he sustained the tendon injury while taking swings in the batting cage Tuesday before the Astros’ 2-1 win over the Dodgers at Daikin Park.
“It’s tough,” said Correa, who missed Tuesday’s game. “Not what I was expecting. Now it’s time to deal with it, face it head-on and focus on the rehab.”
Correa told reporters that he felt and heard a “pop” from the ankle while he was taking a swing in the batting cage. He then fell to the ground and couldn’t put weight on his left foot. He said he expects to have surgery “at some point this week.”
Correa estimated that he will be out for at least dix to eight months.
He and the Astros also plan to seek other medical opinions. The Astros placed Correa on the 10-day disabled list with a left ankle tendon injury Wednesday, a move retroactive to Tuesday.
“I might not understand it now, but I’m going to keep moving forward, trusting the Lord’s plan,” Correa said. “I’m going to keep a positive attitude. I know it comes at a moment where I’m falling in love with baseball more than ever.”
Correa, who reunited with the Astros last season through a trade from the Minnesota Twins, hit .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs through 32 appearances in 2026. The three-time All-Star and 2017 World Series champion hit .276 with 13 home runs and 52 RBIs over 144 appearances last season, including time split between the Twins and Astros.
The 31-year-old is under contract through 2028, with team options from 2029 through 2032.
The Astros (15-22), who won three of their last four games, sit in fourth place in the American League West, four games behind the division-leading Athletics (18-17).
Nick Allen started at shortstop for the Astros on Tuesday. Houston also recalled infielder Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A on Wednesday.
They will host the Dodgers in a series finale at 2:10 p.m. EDT Wednesday at Daikin Park, and have listed Braden Shewmake as the starting shortstop.
Shewmake, who started at third base Tuesday, went 2 for 3 with a home run in that game. Isaac Paredes, who started at first base Tuesday, was listed at third base for Wednesday’s finale. Veteran shortstop Jose Altuve, who turned 36 on Wednesday, is not in the Astros’ starting lineup.
Astros utility player Zach Dezenzo is to make his 2026 season debut and start in left field.
