The Chicago Cubs agreed to trade minor league infielder Cole Mathis to the New York Mets in exchange for left-handed pitcher David Peterson.
Sources told ESPN, The Athletic and MLB.com about the agreement Wednesday night.
Peterson, 30, went 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA through his first 16 appearances this season. He went 9-6 with a 4.22 ERA over 30 starts in 2025, when he earned his first All-Star selection. Peterson owns a career ERA of 4.31 over 147 appearances.
Peterson is set to hit free agency next off-season.
He will join an injury-plagued Cubs rotation that owns the third-worst ERA in the National League, at 4.64. The Cubs’ pitcher staff ranks as the sixth-worst overall in the National League, with a 4.30 ERA.
The Cubs (43-37) won five of their last six games, including their last three against the Mets. They sit in third place in the National League Central, seven games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers (49-29).
Mathis, 22, was a second-round pick by the Cubs in the 2024 MLB Draft. The infielder hit .272 with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs through 39 minor league appearances this season. He hit .248 with 13 home runs and 53 RBIs over the first 68 minor league appearances of his career.
He was the No. 13 prospect in the Cubs organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
The Mets (34-46) are on a five-game losing streak and sit in last place in the National League East, 14.5 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves (48-31).
They will host the Cubs in a series finale at 7:10 p.m. EDT Thursday in Flushing, N.Y.
