The Miami Marlins agreed to a 1-year deal with former Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks, a league source told UPI on Wednesday.
Fairbanks’ agreement with the Marlins is pending a physical. The right-handed pitcher went 4-5 with a 2.83 ERA and a career-best 27 saves over 61 appearances last season.
Fairbanks, 32, has a career 3.19 ERA and recorded 90 saves over 275 appearances since his 2019 MLB debut. He joined the Rays in a 2019 trade with the Texas Rangers.
Fairbanks recorded a 2.58 ERA and 25 saves over 49 appearances in 2023. He logged a 3.57 ERA and 23 saves over 46 appearances in 2024. Fairbanks also logged a 3.60 ERA over a dozen postseason appearances for the Rays from 2020 through 2022, including in the 2020 World Series.
The Rays signed Fairbanks to a three-year, $12 million contract extension in 2023. They declined the $12.5 million 2026 option on that deal in November.
