New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German, who threw a perfect game earlier this season, stepped away from the club to enter inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse, the team announced.

The Yankees said Wednesday that German agreed to voluntarily submit to the treatment. He will be placed on the restricted list while away from the team. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters German is not expected to pitch again this season. Advertisement

“It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being,” the Yankees said. “We will respect his privacy as he begins this process.”

German logged MLB’s first perfect game since 2012, accomplishing the rare feat in an 11-0 win over the Oakland Athletics on June 28 in Oakland, Calif. The seven-year veteran was 5-7 with a 4.56 ERA through 20 appearances this season.

German, 30, owns a 31-28 record with a 4.41 ERA through 112 career appearances. He was suspended for 81 games in 2020 for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy. German also received a 10-game ban in May for violating MLB’s foreign substance policy. Advertisement

He is eligible for arbitration in 2024 and can become a free agent in 2025.

Cashman spoke to the team Wednesday night, before the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2 in New York. He also said the Yankees were made aware of an issue involving German before Tuesday’s game against the Rays.

“I’m not going to go through the details of it,” Cashman told reporters. “Certainly, it’s a very serious issue that affects way too many people, unfortunately. Hopefully the steps that are being taken today will really benefit him for the remaining part of his life, because it’s a very serious problem that you have to address head on.”

The Yankees (56-52) will host the Houston Astros (62-47) at 7:15 p.m. EDT Thursday at Yankee Stadium.
