Burger sales were up an estimated 800% during the Miami Marlins’ 9-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, sparked by a promotional sale to welcome new addition Jake Burger to the lineup, the team said.
The Marlins announced Wednesday that they would honor Burger by offering fans $5 burgers at concession stands throughout loanDepot park. The team later said it sold 2,100 burgers during the game. Advertisement
For comparison, the Marlins sold about 530 burgers Saturday with a crowd of 32,000. Their sales Wednesday represented the increase of 800% compared to typical Wednesday game consumption.
Burger joined the Marlins in a Tuesday trade. The third baseman went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a walk in Wednesday’s comeback victory.
“That was sweet,” Burger told reporters, when asked about the burger promotion. “My wife took a picture in front of one of the signs. It’s awesome. I think it’s really cool the team put out a promotion like that for me.”

Marlins first baseman Josh Bell, who also joined the team in a Tuesday trade, went 4 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk in the victory. Marlins left fielder Jesus Sanchez hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th to clinch the win.
The Marlins traded minor league pitcher Jake Eder to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Burger. Burger, 27, entered the league as the No. 11 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft.
He hit .214 with a career-high 25 home runs and 52 RBIs through 88 games this season for the White Sox. Burger owns a career .232 batting average, with 34 home runs through 155 MLB appearances.
The Marlins (58-51) will host the Phillies (58-50) in the series finale at 12:10 p.m. EDT Thursday in Miami.
