The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza after a 34-47 start to their 2026 MLB campaign, the National League East franchise announced Friday.

Vice president of player development Andy Green will serve as the Mets’ interim manager.

Mendoza led the Mets to a 206-199 record over the last three seasons. The Mets advanced to the National League Championship Series in his first season, but failed to make the playoffs in 2025. The Mets’ struggles under Mendoza occurred despite registering of the highest payrolls in baseball.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment,” Mets owner Steve Cohen said in a statement. “He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best.

“Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”

The Mets are tied with the Seattle Mariners for the fourth-worst batting average (.231) in baseball. Their 328 runs are tied with the San Francisco Giants for the second-fewest in the Nationla League. The Mets’ .299 on-base percentage in the second-worst in MLB.

“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said.

“Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward.”

The Mets sit in last place in the National League East, 15 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves (48-31). They went 2-8 over Mendoza’s final 10 games, including an active six-game losing streak.

The Mets will attempt to end that skid when they host the Philadelphia Phillies at 7:10 p.m. EDT Friday in Flushing, N.Y.
