Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage, who shined during the 2025 World Series, will start 2026 on the injured list, manager John Schneider announced Thursday.
Schneider told reporters that Yesavage is dealing with a right shoulder impingement.
“It’s something that he reported to camp with and it obviously led to his slow build-up, as well,” Schneider said, according to MLB.com.
“Right now, he’s feeling good and he’s in a better place now to continue to ramp up. He’s going to continue on the program he’s been on.”
Yesavage went 1-0, with 13 hits and five runs allowed over three regular-season appearances in 2025 for the Blue Jays. The 22-year-old right-handed pitcher, who joined the Blue Jays as the No. 20 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, went 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA last postseason.
That span included a stellar showing in Game 5 of the World Series, when he allowed three hits and one run, with 12 strikeouts, over seven innings in a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Yesavage also started Game 1, allowing four hits and two runs over four innings in an earlier triumph over the eventual World Series champions.
The Blue Jays don’t plan to completely shut down Yesavage, who is expected to return to the mound in a week as he tests his shoulder and rekindles velocity.
Yesavage’s shelving, paired with injuries to Shane Bieber and Jose Berrios, could lead the Blue Jays without several prominent arms atop their pitching staff to start the 2026 campaign.
Max Scherzer, Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce and Eric Lauer are among their healthy starters.
The Blue Jays will host the Athletics in their regular-season opener March 27 in Toronto.
