The Pittsburgh Pirates signed rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin to a nine-year contract extension, they announced Wednesday

Sources told ESPN, the New York Post and The Athletic that the deal is worth a franchise-record $140 million. Griffin, baseball’s top prospect, is now under contract with the Pirates through the 2034 season.

“Signing Konnor is a meaningful commitment to this team, this city and our fans,” Pirates owner Bob Nutting said in a news release. “It reflects our belief in Konnor, in this season’s club and in the future of our organization.

“Konnor represents everything we value in a player: exceptional talent, strong character, a team-first mentality and a maturity that stood out to all of us from the beginning. He is the right person, from the right family, and this is another important step in the work we have been doing to build something lasting.”

Griffin, who made his big league debut Friday, joined the Pirates as the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. The 19-year-old hit .336 with 21 home runs, 26 doubles, four triples, 95 RBIs and 68 stolen bases over his first 127 minor league appearances. Griffin went 3 for 17 (.176) with a double and three RBIs through his first five MLB appearances.

“It feels great knowing I will be a Pittsburgh Pirate for a long time,” Griffin said, according to MLB.com. “The goal is to win every year. And I believe we can do that.

“It will be nice to have everything behind me and now I can just go play baseball.”

The Pirates (7-4) will host the San Diego Padres (5-6) in the finale of a three-game series at 12:35 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
