MLB-worst Mets promote prospect A.J. Ewing for opener with Tigers

The New York Mets will promote premier prospect A.J. Ewing on Tuesday for the home opener of a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers.

Sources told The Athletic, MLB.com and ESPN about the decision Monday night. The Mets have yet to confirm it.

Ewing, 21, is the Mets’ No. 2 prospect and ranks No. 78 among baseball’s Top 100 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Scouts have praised the 5-foot-10, 160-pound outfielder/second baseman for his speed on the base paths, ability to make contact and improved instincts at the plate.

The fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft hit .339 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs, 11 RBIs and 17 stolen bases over 30 minor league appearances in Binghamton and Syracuse, N.Y., this year. He turned pro after high school in Ohio.

He hit .290 with 49 doubles, 15 triples, 15 home runs, 118 RBIs and 101 stolen bases over the first 251 minor league appearances of his career.

The Mets lost three of their last four games and have MLB’s worst record (15-25). They recorded the fewest RBIs and the worst on-base percentage and slugging percentage in MLB so far this season. They also tied for the fewest runs scored and totaled the second-fewest hits and fourth-fewest home runs in baseball.

The Mets will need to open a spot on their 40-man roster to make space for Ewing, a left-handed hitter. They will host the Tigers (19-22) at 7:10 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Flushing.
